RAPID SYNTHESIS OF DEGRADABLE POLYOLS BASED ON ESTERS AND THIOETHERS FOR USE IN POLYURETHANES

A degradable polyurethane (PUr) having degradation rates useful for hemostatic dressings for controlling bleeding in traumatic wounds. Degradable PUrs may be synthesized from degradable monomers based on hydrolytically labile esters and oxidatively labile thioethers using rapid click-chemistry reactions. Monomers may include trimethylolpropane tris(3-mercaptopropionate) (TMPMP), dipentaerythritol hexakis(3-mercaptopropionate) (DPEHMP), dipentaerythritol hexakis(3-mercaptopropionate) (DPEHMP) or 2,2'-(ethylenedioxy) diethanethiol reacted with hydroxyethyl acrylate, 3-buten-1-ol, 3-methyl-3-buten-1-ol, or 3-buten-2-ol. Synthesis of these monomers is rapid and has no byproducts or toxic catalysts that require removal, enabling polyol synthesis and immediate use in further polymerization
