METABOLITE-BASED POLYMERS AND NANOPARTICLES FOR THE TREATMENT OF INFLAMMATORY DISEASES
Cargo-free metabolite-based nanoparticles with high biocompatibility and low organ toxicity are provided to dampen pro-inflammatory responses while mitigating accompanying metabolic dysregulation in certain inflammatory conditions such as obesity and its metabolic sequelae such as type 2 diabetes. These nanoparticles are also useful as treatment for inflammatory and allergic conditions such as allergic airway inflammation. These nanoparticles are engineered from biodegradable polymers comprising endogenous bioactive metabolites, which upon cellular internalization are degraded into their monomeric components over time to elicit multimodal immunomodulatory functions without the need for frequent dosing, including inducing anti-inflammatory immune cell phenotypes, i.e., M2 macrophages.
